Partner Spotlight - Small Data SF

A day for devs, AI builders, and data people to share knowledge with hands-on workshops and technical talks

What do we mean when we talk about Small Data? It's not about data volume - it's about Real Data workloads. Most workloads don't require Petabytes of data, so why are we obsessed with engineering our systems and workflows for Petabyte scale?

Small Data SF is a two-day gathering for developers and data people to come together and start having real conversations about simplifying our work now that 10Tb of Big Data now fits on your laptop. Do you really need distributed systems for that? With hands-on workshops and technical talks with leaders in data and AI, this is San Francisco’s chance to gather and share knowledge with a pragmatic lens on making the most out of real data volumes and AI workflows.

Here’s an overview of what’s happening:

  • 8 action-packed, hands-on workshops to build together and create new connections and community - choose up to 2 three-hour topics to build in sessions facilitated by seasoned experts with real-world experience

  • 14 technical talks and strategic sessions from leading engineers and founders in data and AI

  • An esteemed user panel with leaders from the Enterprise, Public Sector, Consumer, and Tech worlds

  • 9 technical demo stations staffed by fellow practitioners ready to answer your questions and debug your thorniest code and queries

  • Yummy meals, snacks, a reception, a closing happy hour, and more espresso bars than you’ll know what to do with!

  • Killer swag and street cred for kicking off the small data movement in person

  • One priceless chance to hear from esteemed speakers like Wes McKinney, founder of Posit, Pandas and Apache Arrow, MotherDuck CEO Jordan Tigani, Kathleen Kenealy from Google Gemma, and more speak on the Small Data SF stage and join you throughout the day for follow-up conversations and a closing happy hour.

The 2040 presidential election is unlike any in US history. The Republican candidate is an AI named PresiBot, created by a tech startup, KumbAI, who are in deeply over their heads. The Democratic candidate is a fake Native American chief seeking to abolish the United States. What could go wrong?

With PresiBot plummeting in the polls and tech giants like Happinet scheming to take over, KumbAI's brash CEO Ethan Burnswagger and reluctant CTO Arvind Subramanian struggle to keep their company, their friendship—and their lives—under control. But the center cannot hold, and KumbAI, the campaign and America careen inexorably toward disaster.

Fast-paced and dialogue-driven, as befits our ADHD age, 2040 is a scathing critique of the current state of America—from the tech giants' all encompassing empires and the fear and hype surrounding AI to the invasion of the mainstream by ever-kookier political ideas. Set in a dystopian San Francisco in a near future we can all too easily anticipate, it features characters, entities and incidents whose resemblance to actual ones may or may not be purely coincidental.

If you want to have wicked fun while discovering what AI really is, how the tech industry works, where our deepening polarization might lead us, and—most important—how to break out of this cycle, this is the book for you.

A huge promise for LLMs is being able to answer questions and solve tasks of arbitrary complexity over an arbitrary number of data sources. The world has started to shift from simple RAG stacks, which are mostly good for answering pointed questions, to agents that can more autonomously reason over a diverse set of inputs, and interleave retrieval and tool use to produce sophisticated outputs.

Building a reliable multi-agent system is challenging. There's a core question of developer ergonomics and production deployment - what makes sense outside a notebook setting. In this talk we outline some core building blocks for building advanced research assistants:

1. Advanced data and retrieval modules

2. Advanced agent workflows that balance dynamic agent reasoning with constraints

3. A service architecture that can run agents in production.
